Rose, a three-legged senior Jack Russell for adoption in Pretoria

Rose is a very special female Jack Russell in Pretoria, Gauteng, estimated to be around 12 years old. Her exact age cannot be confirmed because Rose’s earlier life is unknown.

She was rescued after living as a stray on the streets and has already overcome more than most little dogs ever should. At some point after being rescued, Rose was attacked by a Malinois and suffered such severe injuries to one of her legs that the vet was unable to save it.

Today Rose is a happy three-legged girl who has adjusted remarkably well. Her rescuer reports that she gets around comfortably and does not let having three legs stop her from enjoying life, following her person around and soaking up attention.

Rose is now looking for another loving home because her owner is moving to a property where dogs are not permitted.

ROSE’S STORY

Rose’s life could have been very different if someone had not stopped to help her.

She was found living as a stray and was taken in by a dedicated rescuer who gave her safety, care and a home.

Later, Rose was attacked by a Malinois. One of her legs was so badly injured that despite veterinary treatment, it could not be saved.

Rose adapted to life on three legs extremely well. Her rescuer says she copes comfortably and has learned to get around without letting it define her.

But there is another part of Rose’s story that says a great deal about the type of little dog she is.

Her rescuer worked with children with special needs, and Rose spent time around them. Her gentle companionship had a meaningful impact on the children she interacted with.

It is a lovely glimpse into Rose’s ability to connect quietly with people.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT ROSE

Rose is very much a people-orientated little dog.

She loves attention and enjoys following her person around the home. She can initially be a little shy, but once she realises she is safe and is treated kindly, her affectionate side comes through.

Rose does not enjoy being alone for long stretches and would be particularly well suited to a home where someone is around for much of the day.

This could make her a lovely companion for an older person, someone who works from home, or a quieter household looking for a little dog who enjoys being close to her person.

Of course, the final match would need to take Rose’s individual needs and the household circumstances into account.

Rose is house-trained. Her owner has explained that she may occasionally wet herself when she falls into a particularly deep sleep. This is different from regularly toileting inside the home, and her future family should simply be prepared to manage these occasional accidents with patience and kindness.

🏡 ROSE’S IDEAL HOME

At this stage of her life, Rose deserves a calm, loving home where companionship matters more than constant activity.

Her ideal home would offer:

  • Plenty of human company
  • Someone who is home for a good portion of the day
  • A calm and patient environment
  • Understanding that she is an older, three-legged dog
  • Gentle handling while she settles into her new surroundings
  • Careful introductions if another dog is already in the home
  • No cats
  • Understanding around her occasional sleeping accidents
  • A comfortable indoor sleeping area where she can stay close to her people

Rose could potentially be a wonderful companion for an elderly person or someone working from home, particularly someone wanting a small dog who enjoys company and being part of everyday life.

Because she has only three legs, her future home should also take her mobility into account and make everyday life as comfortable and accessible as possible.

❤️ WHY DOES ROSE NEED A NEW HOME?

Sometimes life circumstances change unexpectedly, and difficult decisions have to be made.

Due to a change in her owner’s living circumstances, Rose will unfortunately not be able to accompany him to his new home, as dogs are not permitted at the property.

Rose remains safely with her owner while Little Doggy Rescue helps find a loving and suitable new home for her.

Home-to-Home Adoptions • No kennels. Ever.

Rose will also take some familiar belongings with her, including two beds, her blanket, food and food bowl. Having familiar things around her may help her feel more settled as she adjusts to her new home.

ABOUT JACK RUSSELLS

Jack Russells are often intelligent, people-focused dogs with plenty of personality, although every dog is an individual.

Rose is now a senior girl, so choosing a home based on her own temperament, mobility and companionship needs is far more important than general expectations about the breed.

For Rose, the most important things are kindness, companionship and a home where she can feel safe and included.
